SAAR 2018

August 19, 2018 - December 8, 2018

Summer Academy for Artistic Research Malmö 12-19.8.2018

The Nordic Summer Academy for artistic research (SAAR) will be held between August 12th and 19th 2018, in Malmö, Sweden. All sessions will take place at the Inter Arts Center, a resource for interdisciplinary artistic research at the Faculty of Fine and Performing arts at Lund University.

CALL IN MARCH 2018

SAAR brings artist-researchers (PhD candidates, Doctoral candidates or research fellows in artistic research) in a wide range of art forms together from Norway, Finland and Sweden and will this year be organized by Stefan Östersjö, associate professor of artistic research at the Malmö Academy of Music.

The Summer Academy provides a supportive setting where artist-researchers from various art fields present their ongoing artistic work and research and receive feedback from experienced tutors and peers from leading academic institutions. The summer academy aims to reflect the international diversity and scope of artistic research and to provide a stimulating and creative environment. It seeks to clarify, discuss and develop further emerging themes and issues arising out of the individual fellowship projects of the participants within the framework of artistic research.

Each participating country in the SAAR network selects their participants internally and inform prospective applicants how to register. The number of allocated participants per country is six (Finland: 6, Sweden: 6, Norway: 6), altogether 18 participants. Each country also has three supervisor positions allocated to them, making it altogether 9 supervisors participating in SAAR.

The deadline for partner countries to submit the names of all participators is April 6 2018. The contact person within the network for this is Stefan Östersjö stefan.ostersjo@mhm.lu.se  tel +46 76 102 97 25

WORKING METHODS

The aim of SAAR is to create a setting which is practice-oriented and allows for an in depth discussion of the participants’ research projects. The form of SAAR 2018 is that of a laboratory, and each participator is invited to make a presentation of ongoing work, which ideally can be a work-in-progress, or a finished piece. It is essential that a technical rider is provided together with the abstract for the presentation (see further below) in order to ensure the feasibility of the presentations, and to organize the flow of events.

From Monday through Wednesday, all participants make presentations within this lab. The presentations and discussions are all in plenary sessions, in which all participators are invited into the discussion.

On the Thursday, a special excursion day is to be organized by the host institutions.

The Friday and Saturday will be devoted to group discussions on topics identified over the first three days. It will also be possible to sign up for individual supervision. Sunday morning will allow for summing up and evaluation, ending with a final lunch.

Abstracts

Before the start of SAAR 2018 all participants must enter short written abstracts outlining their presentations.  Abstracts are entered via an electronic form that will be distributed by the coordinator. The presentations will be published online, but also form the basis for the structuring of the sessions.

The main points to address in the abstract are:

● A short general presentation of your work
● Describe the context of your research
● Describe the artwork you wish to present and three specific problems/questions/perspectives that you wish to discuss
● Choose 5 keywords to describe your research
● This presentation should be in a maximum 1 A4. The presentations should be read by all participants thoroughly before the start of the week.

Other activities

In terms of social activities, we will provide information about interesting events or other possible activities in Malmö in the evenings. These will not be compulsory, but some might decide to go together. On the Thursday we will organize an excursion in the suburban area of Malmö. More information about the excursion will be provided later on.
