Run jointly by University of the Arts and Aalto University, the TAhTO Doctoral Programme in Artistic Research organises a festival, Ice Breaking Fantasies, held from 19 to 27 September 2014 at the Kuva/Tila exhibition facility in Punavuori, Helsinki.
The week-long festival is open to everyone who is interested in artistic research and art. Featuring performances, concerts, installations and video art, the festival uses art to showcase artistic research, injecting it into urban culture.
Ice Breaking Fantasies features ten artists from the TAhTO programme who study at the three academies of the University of the Arts and at various schools in Aalto University.
Concepted by the doctoral students themselves, the event represents a new approach to artistic research and art. Instead of an academic conference, participants present and develop their research in an event that is open to the public.
Held in September, the festival also investigates the potential of the new Kuva/Tila exhibition venue of the Academy of Fine Arts. Opened last autumn, the space functions as a conventional gallery, but it also offers a venue for events and gives the public a glimpse into art education.
The TAhTO Doctoral Programme in Artistic Research is a joint venture launched in 2012 by the three academies of the University of the Arts – Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy and Theatre Academy – and by Aalto Arts. It is the first joint doctoral programme by Finnish art universities that focuses exclusively on artistic research. The starting points of research in the programme are the practices of art, artistic thinking, observation and action.
In addition to the Ice Breaking Fantasies festival, two other major artistic research events are organised at the University of the Arts during the summer and autumn. The Summer Academy of Artistic Research SAAR convenes at the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre Hanasaari in Helsinki from 31 July to 8 August 2014. On 4 and 5 September 2014, the DocMus Doctoral School at Sibelius Academy organises the first festival conference on music performance and artistic research under the title Doctors in Performance.
Ice Breaking Fantasies is funded by the University of the Arts and the Academy of Finland.
